What inspires your art?
Growing up on a farm as a child, the deep-rooted beauty of nature and farm life will forever be a big part of what inspires my art. The vast landscapes of our country and the changing seasons influence the colour of my work. As the people in my life age, my focus has shifted a bit and I look towards people with more empathy and compassion. I began to see vintage themes, when people spend time doing things, living slow, dressing well, all with old fashioned elegance.
How do you translate your emotions into your artwork?
One of my recent series consists of sheep portraits that are portrayed in a playful and imaginative way, with the sheep wearing vintage clothes, suits, wool jerseys or hats. It is a way for me to cherish the longing and homesickness of farm live.
Can you share a memorable moment or experience that influenced your artistic journey?
Running my own framing business was a pivotal experience for me. Seeing the work of other artists passing through my workshop sparked a desire to explore my own artistic abilities. After attending various workshops and art classes, I started developing my own style and discovered new techniques along the way.
What message or feeling do you hope viewers take away from your work?
In my artwork, I tend to bring out feelings of joy and humour and provoke a positive feeling or emotion. I want my work to evoke positive emotions and resonate with people’s memories.
How does your cultural background influence your artistic expression?
Growing up on a farm, I naturally gravitated towards landscapes as my initial artistic themes.
What techniques or mediums do you use to convey your ideas?
I love working with oil paint for its rich, buttery textures. Layering colours allows me to combine my ideas.
Are there any recurring themes or symbols in your art?
Currently, I am enjoying exploring figurative art and animals, among other subjects. There is always so much to explore.
Do you have a favourite piece of your own artwork, and if so, what makes it special to you?
One of my favourite pieces is my first proper charcoal drawing, as well as an oil painting of sheep standing on a road. Sometimes, something just works.
How do you engage with your audience through your art?
I connect with my audience by sharing my work on platforms like Instagram and Facebook. I am also fortunate to be represented by an art gallery and have participated in various exhibitions.
Can you describe the process behind creating one of your recent works?
When I create a new piece, I start with a detailed drawing on a warm-coloured primed canvas. I focus on capturing the intricate details like an eye or ear, gradually building up layers of colour and finishing with highlights.
